Sunday's walk...

Here we are at Canada Place - where the cruise ships dock. We took the SeaBus from the North Shore to Canada place and scoped out which ships we liked for when we get to take our Alaska cruise. Boy are they huge! The Norwegian Line is pretty good - we saw the Norwegian Sun.

The picture is Collin and I by an eagle. These eagles are all over town decorated by various artists - like the angels in LA.

It was a fun day walking around town.

Rainbows and rock climbing

A couple of new pictures today. We went to a camp open house last weekend. Collin had a great time climbing and swimming and shooting the bow and arrows. So we signed him up for a week later this summer. This will be after our 5 week stint at Camp Highland Lake. HL doesn't have rock climbing, but the other camp doesn't have a Tower of Death. Pictures of the Tower of Death to follow in later posts.

The first picture is a double rainbow over Burnaby that we saw from our front window. This was taken after 9pm. I still can't get used to it being daylight until after 10pm here. It's cool, but a little weird when you're trying to sleep.

We're getting ready to head to the Lake next Wednesday so I'm crazy with packing and laundry and trying to figure out what knitting and beading projects to take. Hopefully, a production job will come through and I'll have to come back to Vancouver early. Keep your fingers crossed....

My hubby the cowboy...

Well, here he is - kayaking out around Bowen. He doesn't look like a cowboy - but check this out - http://www.hallmarkchannel.com/publish/consumer/home/shows/gambler_girl_gunslinger.html and you'll see him as a silly, turkey-loving ranch-hand who loses the ranch in a poker game. The movie airs July 11 on the Hallmark Channel. I'm so proud.

Lovely Bowen Island weekend...

This is the view from our lovely landlady's house on Bowen Island. We got to stay there last weekend. It was a beautiful thing. The boys went kayaking and Collin did a little snorkeling while I sat on the deck and read my book and knitted a little - it was National Knit in Public Day after all. The hammock was wonderful too - I fell asleep in it. And the best part - we get to go back this coming weekend with our friend and his family! Can't wait. More pictures to follow.......

where have I been......

Well, I haven't posted for a long while. I went to Pittsburgh to visit my folks for a week in April. Here's a picture of the socks my mom taught me to knit. Then I came back and jumped right into writing some articles and setting up managing editor duties for Brandsplat. Now it's full-on summer here in the beautiful north and I'm learning about living without air-conditioning and getting ready for my son's school to be done.

We're headed to upstate New York for about 5 weeks this summer. Unless I get a production job. Or unless my son gets an acting job. We'll see what happens.

More later. Sorry, I won't be away so long ever again.

more hiking, more knitting.....

More beautiful weather here.  Daffodils sprouting up all over the place - even on the trails.  I'm getting ready to head to Pittsburgh for a week to visit my folks.  I'm taking my socks to knit so my mom can show we how it's done.  Everyone says it's easy but I don't seem to be able to learn it from the diagrams.  As soon as she shows me one time I'll get it - I guess I'm a visual learner.  I've taken enough yarn for 2 pairs of socks.  We'll see what I can do on the long plane rides.  And we'll see if I can update this blog with my folks' dial-up.....(I know, dial-up is so 20th century..)  I'm looking forward to getting to Sarris Candies in Canonsburg and inhaling some chocolate covered pretzels. Happy Easter!

what an incredible day!!!!...

It was a beautiful day today.  So beautiful that I had to walk to the mall to buy some wonderful Cob's Bread (white brick, sliced thin).  Then we walked around Lighthouse Park with the dog.  She went crazy in the woods chasing squirrels. Then, after a late lunch (or early dinner?) we walked to get ice cream.   And Scout didn't even miss us when we went for ice cream.  We haven't left her alone in the apartment by herself too many times cause we don't want her to whine or bark and bother our wonderful landlady.  Little by little we're leaving her - especially after a long walk - so she gets used to being by herself.  Okay - the weekend's over - back to the grind.

cardigan finished......

I finished the cardigan a couple of days ago and have been wearing it around the house.  It's very warm to wear.  Then I went out and bought some cotton to make another one for spring.  This time I think I'll alter the pattern slightly so it fits me a little better.  And maybe I'll add buttons & buttonholes.  And maybe I'll do a moss stitch trim instead of the knit2 purl2 ribbing.  And maybe longer sleeves with bell-shaped ends.  Hmmmmmmm...  I need to think about this for a while.

In the meantime, I've added a few more things to my etsy shop - a laptop sleeve and another purse.  And I've been out pushing my resume at people trying to find a job.  Keep your fingers crossed.

cardigan crazy.....

So I went crazy last night.  I got to the fun part on the cardigan - putting the sleeves on holders and joining the body. I stayed up until 2:30am just cause I couldn't put it down.  And I've already done 4 or 5 more rows this morning before I even had coffee. (I know!!!!)  This is going to be one of those days where life gets in the way of my knitting.  My son has a meeting with an agent today and I'm trying to figure out how to knit up until the last minute.  I shouldn't take it with me, but I might have to.  And then it's pizza and games night tonight - is there a game we can play where I can still knit?  Hmmmmm.

Spring break hijinx....

Yes, this is what happpens during spring break when it's raining and we have too much time on our hands - -- our dog gets a make-over.  I think she knows we're laughing at her and not with her.  Luckily, she's a good sport.  So we took her for a long walk to ease the pain of her humiliation.

I'm continuing with my cardigan - adding 8 stitches every other row until I get to three hundred and twenty some.  I'm cranky with my needles - I use the Denise set that my amazing friend Dawn got me for my birthday years ago. I love them and  they are all I use now.  However, when you use the smaller size needles, the needle part is almost as thick as the cord and it's hard for the project to move around the needles.  And it's really hard when you have a few hundred stitches on them.  I'm having to adjust to going slower --- arrrrrgh.   I have a few more purses to felt today.  It's a good day for felting - it's rainy and there's that wet dog smell in the air.  A little wet wool can only help the air quality.

A change of pace.....

I'm taking a break from my felted purses.  I have a whole pile that need to be sewn and have their handles attached so I'm starting on a cardigan.  I've been working with size 13 and 15 needles for the purses so this is quite a change, working again with 6s and 7s.  After this cardigan I'm going to try my first pair of socks, so I'm glad to be getting used to smaller needles again.

It's been raining and raining for the last couple of days.  It's Spring Break and the kids are off school, so that's not good.  I guess we'll be seeing lots of movies this week and playing lots of video games.

Deep Cove Birthday.....

Happy Birthday to me!!!!  Keith took me to lunch in Deep Cove and this was our view.   Lunch was fabulous - I had braised lamb ragout at the spiffy Arms Reach Bistro.  Then we walked around a nearby park with the dog.  A fun birthday afternoon.  Now we get to go pick up my car from it's federal and provincial inspections.  I hope it passed!!!

Saturday hike.......

Yesterday was a strange weather day.  When we woke up, the sun was shining and it was beautiful.  When I checked the forecast though, it said rain (what a surprise in Vancouver!).  We drove to Granville Island and wandered around and enjoyed lunch at Sammy J. Peppers.  Then we headed to a movie ( The Stone of Destiny - good flick!).  When we came out of the movie, it was hailing.  Not the hard, icy hail that hurts when it hits, this was more like being pelted with dippin' dots, the no-flavor kind.  It finally let up and we finished with a windy walk through part of Stanley Park.  In the picture, we live up behind my head, on the left, among those houses going up the hillside.  We even had enough time left in the day to watch the incredibly long "Patton".  Collin is into WWII so we've been watching all the classics.  It's amazing what you can fit into your day if you don't have to go to a soccer game.

Smelly dogs.....

This is our crazy mutt after her bath, fluffy and lounging on her Scooby Doo blanket.  Why did she get a bath?  She rolled in ....oh, let's just say......human waste while we were out walking.  Apparently, down by the docks, some guy is living in a tent and Scout decided to pay him a visit.  I heard her barking in the woods, which means he was probably there.  She was disgusting and barking like a crazy dog when she got back.  It was gross.  Luckily, Keith hadn't gone to his audition yet and was able to help me get the bath water ready.  Poor thing, she had no clue why I was yelling at her.  We had to buy her a new collar - even when I put the old one through the wash, it was still very ripe.  I guess we won't be going back to that walk for a while.  Too bad, it was a nice, easy, flat walk for when I don't feel like tramping through the woods.

Crazy month...

It's been crazy - with Collin's birthday, our anniversary, Keith's auditions, my job search, a sick dog....the list goes on and on.  Just like every other family, I suspect.  Collin and his buds had a great time at the paintball place - there were a bunch of other kids there that were the same age so they weren't outnumbered by the 18-30 year olds.  It was raining, so they not only got painted, they got muddy too.  Collin got shot in the head and had a big welt for a few days.  It was a badge of honor.

I've been slacking off on the knitting.  We might be headed to Phoenix for spring break and I've been concentrating on getting a few things done before we go, you know, car inspections, mammograms, blah, blah, blah.  My knitting pile is huge and it makes me nervous to look at it.  I'm still putting my felted purses up on etsy a few at a time and trying to organize my office/beading/knitting/PMC space.  Small space, many crafts....

another beautiful day......

Here's the view we had while we rested during our hike around Lighthouse Park.  We sat and read our books while the dog nearly fell off the cliff.  It was chilly but warm in the sun while we sat.   I could have stayed there for hours reading, but with a restless 12 year-old and a rambunctious doggy, we only managed to stay still for half an hour.

I made the mistake of not paying attention to the names of the trails.  While choosing between Arbutus and Summit, I chose Summit without even thinking that there might be a climb involved.  That'll teach me to pay attention.

Beautiful weather....

We've been busy.  The weather has been terrific - chilly but sunny and beautiful.  We've gone on a long hike almost every day this past week.  And Tuesday was Collin's birthday.  Oh, to be 12 again. He wants to go to the paintball place with a couple of friends for his birthday.  I told him that it hurts when you get hit, but he doesn't listen to me.   They are gonna love it.  And I get to sit and knit for 3 hours while they play.

These are two pictures of the Cleveland Dam area, near Grouse Mountain, where Collin snowboards.  It was a beautiful afternoon walk.

I've felted a few more bags and put up a few more in my etsy store.  I've started on MacBook sleeves.  I'm still experimenting with the shrinkage - sometimes it works and sometimes it's too small.  But that's the fun in felting.  Not knowing exactly what you're going to get when you open the washer.

Collin has the day off from school tomorrow - maybe he wants to go tubing......

my "to do" pile.....

Whoa, I've been knitting - this is my "to do" pile of purses to finish.  They've all been knitted and felted and now they need to be sewn and finished. However, it's sunny here today in Vancouver.  I've learned that when the sun shines here you need to take full advantage cause it doesn't happen often. So, I'm gonna take my pooch Scout for a long hike - then I can sit with a cup of tea and start on the pile.

What am I thinking.....

So I did something crazy today.  I put in an application to work at a local ski resort.  They might be in need of tram operators. Those of you who know me are shaking your heads and laughing. We'll see if they call.  One of the perks would be learning to snowboard or ski.  Hey - maybe I should see if they'll hire me for the summer zip-trekking.  Can you see me zipping through the trees?  Yeah, I'll post pictures.......

Other than that, I uploaded a few more items to my etsy site - DawnMacDesigns.etsy.com. Here's one of the bracelets I put up there today.  Go and check it out.  Then I knitted for the rest of the afternoon, looking out at the big cargo ships getting unloaded at the docks.

Welcome to the Great White North

This first post was hard to do - so I'm gonna keep it simple.

I've recently moved here to Vancouver (from Los Angeles) with my family.  I'll be blogging about moving, our new life in Canada, my hobbies (knitting, jewelry-making) and anything else that comes up.

Stick around......it could get interesting.......
